On 12 March, the Lyceum, a local non-profit, sponsored Monterey County History Day at Los Arboles Middle School in Marina. Local students were asked to write or present a poster on a historical theme. Our AF chapter offered two prizes specifying that the subject matter must relate to France. Three 12 year-old students rose to the challenge and wrote papers and created posters on subjects related to France. Simone Jackson, member of our AF Board of Directors, was a judge. Thirty students and 50 guests attended the event.
The AF awarded $30 cash prizes and certificates to two students and a certificate of excellence to a third. The participation of AF in this competition has certainly helped promote the French culture. Many thanks to Pauline Cantin and Simone Jackson for their participation in this event.
A reception honoring the students will take place on Saturday, 14 May, 3:00 P.M., Pauline Cantin’s home, 17 Via Ladera, Monterey, CA. Mr. Tom Nelson, Executive Director of the Lyceum of Monterey, will attend. The students will speak about their research and present their posters about the following topics: The Dreyfus Affair; Baron Haussman’s Paris; Coco Chanel. Attendees are invited to participate by asking questions and adding their personal knowledge on these topics. Please come and encourage these youngsters!
